Getting started with animals at Humble by Nature

The decision to keep animals can be both exciting and daunting and good preparation is essential. There’s no better place to learn what you need to know than Humble by Nature, with courses for beginners that cover smallholding, pigs, sheep and – new for 2017 – Goats for Beginners.

The practical courses will take you through a range of essentials, including: how much land you need; different breeds; administrative essentials and general care such as feeding and spotting health problems.

All tutors are experts in their fields and courses have small numbers to ensure personal attention and hands-on experience. Find out what’s involved in starting a smallholding with Liz Shankland. Farmer Tim covers all things sheep related, and respected local vet and pig expert Bob Stevenson will teach you about pigs.

Once you’ve decided you want to take the plunge then one of your first jobs will checking your fencing is up to it. Join Farmer Tim for a hands-on day learning a variety of fencing techniques.
