It’s no mean feat for any organisation to create a sustainable incredibly well received Festival, but when its run solely by local people from the community, with no funding at all, it’s all the more praiseworthy. “Castell Roc” that’s held inside Chepstow Castle has done just that.

In five short years the Festival has gone from strength to strength. From its humble inception the Festival has created national praise for its “relaxed and intimate” atmosphere and has attracted Artistes and Touring shows that are usually reserved for much larger City Centre Theatres & venues.

A representative of the Festival says “Chepstow Castle is a wonderful venue, the oldest surviving post –Roman stone fortification in Britain dating back to 1067. We had been promoting shows around the Chepstow area for many years previously and we were over the moon when a discussion with Cadw spawned the possibilities of some shows inside the Castle.

It’s a very special place for sure, that has an atmosphere like absolutely nowhere else especially as the sun goes down. The venue creates an amazing Arena for live performances, from the minute that Festival goers see the imposing entrance the scene is set. Inside, its relaxed, chilled out and incredibly ‘intimate’. Festival goers always comment on this, including a couple last year that had seen Jools Holland on over 70 different occasions all over the Country, who stated that the show at Chepstow was ‘the best he had ever been to and by a long way’, which is a great testament to the Venue, the organisation, the staff and the production team. It is that combination that makes ‘Castell Roc’ what it is. We don’t have ‘screens’ to see the Artistes as you don’t need them as it is all very much ‘up close and personal’. We’ve even had a marriage proposal live on stage!

The Festival attracts thousands from all over the UK to Chepstow, which is a great result for local businesses as well as local tourism. We have people travelling from Europe and even Canada & the USA to come and see us, which makes all the hard work all the more worthwhile. It’s incredible really what a team of dedicated local people can achieve, especially as unlike ‘most’ local Events Castell Roc receives no funding or financial assistance. We hope that readers will see that we have a host of top quality shows on offer for 2017, from Classical to Country & Western to Funk & Soul to Motown to Rock & Roll to Pop Rock and Rock, all very neatly wrapped up in a gorgeous Castle”.
