16th visit of Russian Choir “Voskresenije”
The Russian Vocal Ensemble “Voskresenije”, comprising professional musicians from the St Petersburg Conservatoire, are returning in October for their sixteenth visit to Monmouth to perform in St Mary’s Priory Church. The concert, as usual, will comprise two distinct types of music; part 1 is Russian Orthodox Church music, and part 2 is Russian Folk music, all sung unaccompanied as is customary in the Orthodox Church.
The actual personnel varies from year to year, because of family and professional commitments – only Jurij, the conductor, and Anatoly, the basso profundo, have come to Monmouth every time. The ensemble comprises two each of soprano, alto, tenor and bass, and the conductor; no amplification is used, or indeed needed, but even so the church is filled with their unique Russian sound. From Monmouth the choir will tour south Wales, then move northwards eventually reaching Scotland, before returning home via London.
Anyone who would like an opportunity to hear this excellent Russian ensemble should come to St Mary’s Priory Church on Saturday October 14th; the performance begins at 7-30 pm; tickets are £8, only at the door.
