Logiplex Tech Tips: Get Your Computer Fit

logiplex-computer-phone-imageFor many people the New Year brings a drive to lead a healthier lifestyle and to achieve new goals; but what about those essential parts of business and personal life that are expected to carry on performing day after day despite everything we demand of them – our computers?

If you’ve ever had a computer break down, get infected, lost or stolen, then you may be familiar with that gut-wrenching feeling that comes with knowing that you may have lost all of your vital documents, data and photos – forever! The following tips will help you to get your computer fit for the year ahead.

  • Make backups on a regular basis. These should be both to external hard drives and, where appropriate, to cloud storage.
  • De-clutter. Delete or archive old files and emails that are no longer used.
  • Protect against Viruses. Ensure that your antivirus software is up to date and set to run automatically. Don’t forget about protecting your tablet computers and mobile phones.
  • Be on the lookout for Malware. Be wary of emails that contain attached files and always check what you are being asked to download from emails or websites.
  • Ensure that your Router does not provide an open door to your network. The quickest and easiest action to take is to change the router’s administrative username and password from the factory defaults. The next thing to check is that the firmware is up to date.
  • Avoid using operating systems or software that is no longer supported. Old versions of operating systems (e.g. Windows XP) lack the modern attack-prevention capabilities built into newer versions. Keeping system files up to date and replacing or upgrading old systems is essential.
  • Windows 10 is being promoted heavily but take advice about your system before attempting the upgrade – it’s not always straightforward!
