Well can 2017 top 2016? It will have to go some but things look promising.
2016 finished on a high for the Choir with two performances in Cardiff in between was an event at Whitchurch described by our MD as, “perhaps the best performance yet from MMVC”!
The St David’s Hall Remembrance Concert on 5th November was another memorable and very moving occasion for the Choir. We shared the stage with the Military Wives Choir, Serenata Ladies Choir, the Military Band of the Royal Welch Regiment and none other than 80’s pop icon Shakin’ Stevens!
After a moving rendition of the Alwyn Humphreys arrangement of Mansions of the Lord from the film “We were soldiers”, many choir members were moved to tears as the poppies fell. It was an unforgettable evening, not least for the “Friend of MMVC” that got lost on the way back to the bus!
Two weeks later we wowed a packed audience at the Old Court Hotel in Whitchurch. This was the second time we had supported St. Dubricius Church, the Choir enjoy this slightly less formal event and it shows in our performance. Sue Morris who organised the evening wrote:
On behalf of everyone at St. Dubricius, thanks so much for the wonderful concert last Friday. I have had so much feedback from delighted members of the audience, not only from Whitchurch, but also Ross and The Forest, who have said that they will be looking out for more of your concerts around the area. Our friends from a Birmingham who were determined to attend were delighted in the singing and the choice of songs. Visitors in The Old Court, really enjoyed themselves and reported back to staff how they were pleased to have been in the hotel that night.
December saw us return to Cardiff to support Kidney Wales at their Reflections Concert. Here we had the privilege to sing with two fabulous soloists, soprano Jessica Robinson and mezzo-soprano Ceri Haf Richards. If you get the opportunity to hear them don’t pass it over!
What does 2017 have in store for the Choir? Our current priority is preparation for Haberdashers Monmouth School for Girls 125th Anniversary Concert to be held in March at St David’s Hall. The main choral piece is a Karl Jenkins arrangement “In These Stones Horizons Sing” commissioned by Wales Millennium Centre for its gala opening in 2004.
At the beginning of March we have a St David’s Day Concert at the Hogs Head, Llanvetherine to support Llanvetherine Church. This will be a chance to show off our full Welsh repertoire.
April will see us return to the Sessions House, Usk for another concert in support of Kidney Wales then we have a number of weddings to look forward to. The autumn holds the promise of a possible return to the Principality Stadium and then our 5th Annual Gala Concert for which we plan something a little different!
In the last three months of 2016 we welcomed six new members, why not come and be part of this fantastic journey?
